Souper Bowl

The youth group will be collecting monetary donations as well as non-perishable food items to donate to MIFA. The youth will be collecting on Souper Bowl Sunday, February 6th, after the worship services.

Youth Ski Trip

The youth group went to Boone, NC on a ski trip January 14th through 17th. Three adults and five students hopped in two vehicles and made the ten hour trek to Boone’s Holiday Inn Express after school on that Friday. Four of the students had never skied before. The weekend was full of fast food, late nights, driving, snow, rental gear, and inside jokes. In the evenings the group went to Farthing Auditorium on the campus of Appalachian State University for worship sessions put together by StudentLife. The band Rush of Fools played music and Memphian, Ed Newton, spoke to the youth who came from all over the United States to ski and worship with one another. All in attendance learned a lot about skiing, Christian community, and God. By the end of the trip all the students had learned to ski on their own and had at least mastered the bunny hill. Memories were made which were talked about during the ten hour trip back home. Everyone made it back safe and there were no injuries on the ski hill. Praise God for a fun filled and meaningful trip!

Chili Cook-Off

Annual Winter Chili Cook-Off

Sunday January 23, 2011

5:00 PM

Get out your Chili Recipes, your secret ingredients, and your chili peppers for the Faith Presbyterian Church Annual Chili Cook-off. This year there will be three categories of Chili to be judged:

1.Traditional Chili

2. Spicy/Hot Chili

3. Meatless Chili

There will also be a cornbread contest. Sign-up sheets for the Chili Cook-Off are out on the main reception desk in the Commons entrance to the church. You can also make a dessert and bring it to be enjoyed that night.

Welcome 2011!

As we begin 2011, I call us to pray. For those of you who were unable to attend the last worship service of 2010 on December, 26th, I called the congregation to prayer. Specifically, we need to pray for our Elders, who will be making some very difficult decisions regarding the church’s ministry, mission, and programs in the coming month. Secondly, we need to pray for our congregation, that is, we need to pray for each other. We have to rebuild the base of our congregation and strengthen it for the road ahead. We need to pray that God will lead us.

Every Monday and Wednesday at 12 noon, the chapel will be open for prayer during the month of January. Prayers will be spoken and said at that time followed by a time of quiet prayer. In addition, there will be prayer guides each Sunday in the bulletin announcement page as well as on the website. I am asking that every person in the church use these each week as a focal point of their prayers.

We ended 2010 strong in ministry, programs, and had a good Stewardship Campaign. However, it is not enough to allow us to continue as we have in 2011. We are at $400,000.00 dollars in pledges for 2011. And with other projected income we should be close to $475,000.00 in total income. This will still be insufficient to maintain our current budget and incorporate the mortgage payment into the general budget of the church. That would require total income of $610,000.00. So cuts and changes will have to be made.

The Session is working and praying and planning for these matters. That is why I am asking you to pray for them as well as our congregation. Like many others congregations, business, and family households, we are feeling the effects of the economy and also a general apathy about religious practice. And we are seeking ways to remedy this. The old ways of doing things are not working.

So as your Pastor I call you to prayer for your congregation and for your Ruling Elders.

Will have their January meeting on Sunday, January 9th from 5:00—6:30 p.m. Ms. Cori will be helping lead our group this month before she heads back to college and we will let Pastor Greg have the night off!
