Pastoral Notes: November 8

Welcome to our Dedication Sunday.  Every year we have a combined worship service to celebrate the life of our congregation as we celebrate what God has done in our lives.  We are excited to be here today as we prepare for next year.  We are very fortunate to have the Rev. Dr. James Quillin with us this morning.  Dr. Quillin is an old friend.  He is the Pastor Emeritus of Highland Heights Presbyterian Church, one of our sister churches here in the Memphis Area.

A big thank you today to Daren Davis and Carlin Stuart and all who have helped the Stewardship Committee prepare this Celebration Lunch and conduct the 2010 Stewardship Campaign.  There is a great deal of hard work and a lot of time given to do any stewardship program.  Thank these Deacons of our congregation for their labor and ministry.

I remind our Elders that we will have our November session meeting tonight at 5 PM.  We have several items to deal with plus our studies.

God Bless you all,

Pastor Greg Darden

Pastoral Notes: November 1

Next Sunday is Dedication Sunday here at Faith Presbyterian Church. We will be having a joint Worship Service that day following Sunday school.  The service will be in the chapel and begin at 10:45 a.m.   Following the worship service we will enjoy the Celebration Luncheon in Faith Hall. If you have not made reservations for the lunch let me urge you to do so today. We need an accurate count as to how many adults and children will be eating that day. In addition, our children’s choir will be singing, there will be other special music, and the Reverend Dr. James Quillin will be our guest preacher. I look forward to seeing everyone next Sunday for this Dedication event.

Thank you to all who helped make our Fall Festival a great success. To the Staff, Fellowship, Outreach, and Mission Committees, to Deacons, Elders, scouts, and members and friends who helped make it a great event your hard work was appreciated. God gave us perfect weather and we had a lot of people, children, youth, and adults of all ages.

God Bless you all,

Pastor Greg Darden

News from Mary Swindoll

Greetings in the name of the Lord!

There may be some concern that Hannah and I have fallen off the face of the earth, but let me assure you that we are fine and well. We left Bolivia on May 30th and slowly made our way towards Winchester, Virginia. Hannah had been accepted to Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia and I felt led to set up house-keeping in Winchester, which is close to my brother and his family, two hours from the Callaway’s, (my daughter, Melanie’s family) and  three hours from Liberty. There were many questions unanswered as we traveled, visiting with family and supporters along the way – Job? Housing? Furnishings? Friends? Church? Ministry?  Although I’ve seen the Lord do many things during my journey with Him, this experience was a new challenge in walking by faith. I felt overwhelmed much of the time.

Step by step things came together and here’s a summary of how the Lord provided during this transition:

  • We crossed the border into West Virginia from Kentucky early on the morning of June 19th. Because of a driving rain, we decided to stop and have breakfast. My Trac Phone rang and it was the Director of Human Resources for Frederick County Public Schools in Winchester, Virginia responding to a resume I sent for a position as assistant instructor for the nurses aide program in the vocational department. An interview was set up for the next week and I was hired for that position, starting in August.
  • The Lord had provided a beautiful place for us to stay in Winchester as I looked for permanent housing. The Haughton family, before they even knew us, invited us to live in their studio apartment. What a blessing it was to have an interim place to live.
  • Through Fellowship Bible Church, their mission’s pastor, called to say that his wife’s aunt had a condo that she needed to rent. It was perfect and about 2 minutes from the school where I would work.
  • We had a nice condo to live in, but NO furnishings. A family in the Callaway’s church offered to take me to an auction in Maryland where one could often find good furniture. I had no clue what to do, but they got me a number. I had a list of the furniture that we needed and after looking over what was available made decisions on what I would bid on. I got everything, most of it brand new, for a fraction of the cost. It’s become a joke because once I got the last item I jumped up and said, “I’m finished, let’s go.”  It’s amazing how everything came together. My little house is beautiful!
  • Even though I am no longer serving in Bolivia, there is a desire to serve the Lord through some special service. Even this desire has been met, as I take care of a special needs child in the afternoons, giving the child’s mother some much needed rest.
  • Through this journey we’ve made many new friends.  Fellowship Bible Church has proven to be a place where the Word of God is loved and taught and I’m in a small group through church that I’m really excited about.
  • Hannah’s entry into college went without a hitch and she is doing well.
  • My time with AVANT Ministries officially ended on September 30th. The same day that I received my first pay check from Frederick Public Schools. We did not go ONE day without financial support.

.
As you see, every question has been answered and every need has been met.
Psalms 37:25 Says, “I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken, or their children begging bread.” THE LORD IS EVER FAITHFUL!

It is with a humble heart that I want to thank each of you that have prayed and supported us through this transition. It is my prayer that the Lord lead you to another ministry that you can support.  I also want to thank AVANT Ministries for their kindness, for the good advice, and for the loving way they cared for Hannah and me.  You have all blessed us.

If you’re ever in or close to Winchester, Virginia please consider visiting with me and please note the following changes in my address and e-mail. I want to keep in touch.
